Choosing the Right Material for Your Outdoor Kitchen
British weather puts unique demands on outdoor surfaces. Whether you’re building a full garden kitchen, a BBQ surround, or a poolside dining space, the right material makes the difference between a worktop that lasts decades and one that fades, cracks or stains within a few seasons.
Quartz
Best for: modern, low-maintenance kitchens
UV-stable outdoor-rated quartz blends from Caesarstone, Silestone and Compac. Non-porous, stain-resistant, consistent finish.
Note: only outdoor-rated ranges should be used outdoors.
Granite
Best for: BBQ areas and heat zones
Naturally heat-resistant. Dense volcanic varieties cope brilliantly with British weather. Dramatic veining and pattern variation.
Note: porosity varies; we’ll guide you to a non-porous option.
Quartzite
Best for: statement pieces
A natural stone offering striking veining, with no two slabs alike. Often more durable than marble while delivering a similar aesthetic.
Note: requires periodic sealing for outdoor use.
Porcelain & Sintered
Best for: full outdoor installations
Dekton, Neolith, Laminam and Ascale. Fully UV-stable, frost-resistant and heat-proof. The premium choice for full outdoor kitchens.
Note: warranties up to 25 years.

Outdoor Kitchen Worktop FAQs
Yes, when the right material is chosen. Sintered stone (Dekton, Neolith, Laminam) is fully frost-resistant and is the most reliable option for UK winters. Granite, quartzite and outdoor-rated quartz also perform well, though we’ll guide you to the right specific product based on your installation. Standard indoor quartz is not recommended for outdoor use.
Sintered stone and granite are 100% UV-stable and will not fade. Outdoor-rated quartz blends are formulated to resist UV but still perform best in partially shaded installations. Standard indoor quartz can fade and discolour outdoors, which is why material selection matters.
Granite and sintered stone offer the best heat tolerance and can typically handle direct contact with hot cookware. Quartz and quartzite should be protected with a trivet or pan rest. We always recommend trivets as good practice regardless of material to extend the life of any worktop.
Sintered stone and outdoor-rated quartz are non-porous and never need sealing. Granite and quartzite are natural stones with varying porosity and benefit from sealing every 1-3 years depending on the specific stone. We’ll provide care guidance specific to your material.
Granite typically offers the best value for outdoor projects: it’s naturally durable, heat-resistant, and available across a wide price range. Outdoor-rated quartz is the next step up. Sintered stone is the premium choice and the most expensive but offers the longest lifespan and lowest maintenance.
From quote acceptance to fitted worktop, typical timelines are 4-6 weeks. This includes templating (taking precise measurements once your supporting carcasses are in place), fabrication in our Hertfordshire factory, and installation. We’ll give you a clear timeline at quote stage.
We’re based in Hertfordshire and regularly fit outdoor kitchens across Welwyn, Hitchin, Stevenage, Hertford, St Albans, North London and the wider South East. If you’re outside this area, get in touch — we likely cover it. View our service area.
Manufacturer warranties vary by material and brand, ranging from 10 years on outdoor-rated quartz up to 25 years on premium sintered stone. We’ll provide the specific warranty documentation for your chosen product as part of your quote.
