Mayor’s Offices, South Bank, London Project2 min read

You can find the Mayor’s Offices within City Hall located on the South Bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. City Hall was designed by Norman Foster and opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created.

We supplied and installed Flamed Granite paving on pedestals outside the roof-top office of the Mayor as well as Terrazzo tiling to public areas inside the building including parts of the curved staircase. This was another project we were proud to of completed and had the opportunity to do and add to our portfolio.

Flamed Granite

Flamed Granite is heated under a high temperature where the high heat causes the individual grains in the stone to burst and change colour. The result is a rougher texture with a more natural, faded appearance. Generally, the colours of flamed granite are more muted and this type of stone is more suitable for areas where grip is essential.

The timeless beauty and long-lasting qualities of granite will always be a classic choice and an appreciated natural stone option in commercial and residential buildings. It is highly versatile and has been the go-to stone for royalty and the wealthy due to its strength and beauty. There are many ancient monuments and buildings around the world that are made from granite and still standing today.

Terrazzo

Terrazzo is a composite material, poured in place or precast and used for floor and wall treatments. It consists of chips of marble, quartz, granite, glass, or other suitable material, poured with a cementitious bind, polymeric, or a combination of both.

It can date back to the ancient mosaics of Egypt when looking through the history, but in more recent times it comes from Italy. Art deco and modern styles from the 1920s to 1940s favoured terrazzo with the dividers allowing for straight or curved lines that increased the decorative potential. One of the most well-known examples of terrazzo is the Hollywood Walk of Fame. It was created in 1958, where a walk was made to honour celebrities in the form of a terrazzo star that displays their name.
