Updating your Kitchen on a Small Budget2 min read

When it comes to the lifespan of a kitchen, it can be as long as 25 years and a project that most of us will only embark on a couple of times during our lifetime. Little updates in the kitchen are more common as this gives you a chance to refresh the existing space and ensure that your demands of busy family life are met. Even on a relatively small budget, these small changes can make a big difference to the heart of the home.

Updating worktops

Concentrating on the most visible areas first, as many aspects of the kitchen are always on show and are also more likely to be subjected to lots of wear and tear. Updating worktops for example is simple enough without too much upheaval. Marble-style quartz can offer a great opportunity to add a trend-setting look to a kitchen that may otherwise appear slightly dated – perfect for an instant refresh.

Adequate Storage

Keep the kitchen in order and uncluttered, particularly if the space is often used by all the family for a range of activities. Open shelves are becoming more and more popular as they tap into the trend for storage, providing somewhere to store jars and recipe books.

Change the colours

If your cabinets are hand-painted, then opting for a different shade can have a dramatic effect on the overall appearance of the room and update it to the current trends. You could even look at changing the cabinet doors – this will just work as well. Investing in some tile paint and changing the splashback is another good idea and will make a big difference – which can be completed in a weekend as it’s an easy task.

Upgrade the kitchen floor

There are so many kitchen floors to choose from and if yours has seen better days then this a very good place to start. There isn’t any need to rip out the whole kitchen as the new flooring can be run underneath the plinths rather than wall-to-wall to keep the costs down.

Create a feature wall

Create a feature wall with a bold colour or an eye-catching patterned wallpaper to add extra vibrancy. Just be sure to choose a wallpaper that is suitable for use in the kitchen and can withstand the humidity and be easily wiped down.

Add lighting

How about adding lighting above the worktops? This will ensure the kitchen is well-lit for tasks like food prep. Adding a more ambient light to the dining area will take your kitchen from day to night in style.
